Mr. Dale Shellhorn

Hughes Aircraft Company, Engineer, 1956-64

Mr. Shellhorn joined The Boeing Company as Lead Engineer, later Engineering Supervisor, on a project that mapped the lunar surface for the Apollo Lunar Landing Program through 1967. On this program, he created the FIRST photo of the Earth taken from outer space (now on display in the Smithsonian Museum); at the time it was called “The Photo of the Century.”

Later, at Boeing, he was Chief Engineer of an Automated People Mover (in Morgantown, W.VA) and of Avionics Systems on the B-52 and B1B Bomber program, and was responsible for leading a team of over 30,000 in the design, development, test, production, and delivery of 21 bombers. This $44 billion dollar project became the model for future Air Force acquisitions.
